Ridgeview students rank among top in national vocabulary contest

Ridgeview Elementary School third grader Ethan McIntosh earned a perfect score in the WordMasters Challenge, a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually.

Competing in the difficult Blue Division, McIntosh (above, left) earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 68 third graders achieved this result.

Ridgeview’s Quynh Nguyen (above, right) also achieved an outstanding score of 19 in the challenge.

The students were coached by their teacher, Melinda Chau. Both students are enrolled in Bloomington’s Elements program for gifted and talented elementary school students.

The WordMasters Challenge encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words that are considerably more difficult than grade level and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.
